A contractor who can answer all six is diagnosing. One who can't is estimating — and asking you to fund the difference.
Worth stating precisely, because it's the one that ends the unit and the one most often claimed loosely.
A leak from the body of the tank. Not a fitting, not a valve, not a connection above it — the shell itself.
Storage tanks corrode from the inside. A glass lining protects the steel, and a sacrificial anode rod corrodes preferentially to protect that lining. When the anode is spent and the lining is breached, the steel begins to go — silently, over years, from a surface nobody can inspect.
By the time water appears through the tank wall, the failure is complete. There's no repair. Welding, sealants, and patches on a pressure vessel that heats and cools daily are delays with a worse ending.

And if only one tap has no hot water, it's almost certainly not the heater — that's a mixer cartridge or isolation valve at that fixture. Say so and save yourself the wrong visit.

Water far too hot, nowhere near hot enough, or wildly inconsistent. Common, inexpensive, fast.
One element fails and you get lukewarm water or a much smaller usable volume. Both fail and you get cold. Elements are consumable parts — replacing one is routine, not evidence the unit is finished.
The pilot lights and won't stay lit. Among the most common gas faults and one of the cheapest to fix.
More involved, still component-level work.
The valve doing its job, or the valve itself failing. Either is addressed — and it is never capped or plugged.
Water on or beside a heater frequently comes from the plumbing rather than the vessel.
Hot and cold mixing inside the tank, giving you noticeably less hot water than the tank size suggests. Repairable, and frequently misdiagnosed as capacity loss or a failing tank.
Rumbling, reduced efficiency, slow recovery, and lost capacity. Flushing addresses it.
The highest-value preventive replacement there is, because a fresh anode extends the life of the tank itself.
