A Jam
It hums but won't turn. Power is reaching the motor and something is wedged between the impellers and the grind ring.
Then free it from underneath. Most units have a hex socket in the base and come with a matching wrench. Work the plate back and forth until it turns freely. No wrench? A wooden spoon handle inserted from above, levered against an impeller, does the same.
Then press the reset button underneath and try again. Usually a bottle cap, a bone fragment, a fruit stone, cutlery, or a bread bag clip.
A Tripped Reset
Completely silent, no response at all. There's a button on the underside — usually red — that pops out when the motor overloads and cuts all power until pushed back in.
Most people don't know it exists, which is precisely why "the disposal is dead" is such a common and such a wrong conclusion.
Also check the breaker, and whether the unit is plugged in where it's a plug-in installation.
A Flange Leak
Water from the top, where the unit meets the sink. The mounting flange seal has failed.
A reseat with fresh sealant and correct tightening. A repair, not a replacement — and one that's frequently misdiagnosed as a dead unit because "it's leaking" gets treated as one condition when it's three.
A Blocked Drain Beyond the Unit
It grinds perfectly and the sink fills. The disposal is doing its job and the waste has nowhere to go — the trap or the line beyond is blocked, usually with grease or accumulated debris.
Replacing the disposal changes nothing here. It's drain work, and it should be billed as drain work.
Because sometimes it is, and pretending otherwise would be its own dishonesty.
Internal seals have failed and water has been inside the motor housing. These are sealed assemblies not designed to be opened. That unit is finished, and anything sold as a repair for it isn't one.
